Tinker Day at Hollins
Oct. 29th, 2010 03:22 pmSo, not sure if I've mentioned this to my LJ peeps, but I started college this fall. And at my college (Hollins U) we have a number of traditions that keep cropping up more and more. One tradition is on a fall day (presumably after the first frost, but definately before parents' weekend, so we can all tell our parents how "totally awesome" tinker day was) all of the wonderful ladies at Hollins (which is an all girls school) wake up at seven, eat Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the dining hall, go dress up in crazy costumes, then go climb a mountain. That's right, a freaking mountain!
My Colorado Pride kept going on and on about how, "That's not a mountain, it's a hill," but most of it is a 45 degree or better vertical climb (in fact, Colorado Pride failed me, I was one of the last people up the mountain). But once I got up there, got some more water in me and started hanging out with all of my friends it was cool. Plus, there was a group of stranglers that I got to hang out with and talk to during our long climb up. I was a little sad because a tinker day tradition is that all of the classes come up with songs to sing to eachother (ours for the Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors respectively were based off of "Stuck in the Middle with you," "Hey Jude," and "Oh Mickey"), and since I was one of the last people up the mountain, I didn't get to sing them with my class. *Sad face*
Me and a few friends in full tinker regalia before climbing the mountain. I'm the one in the yellow bandana.
Me taking pictures of some other friends, post climb. I got to hot and stripped on the way up, stuffing my hip scarves and skirts into my climbing backpack and rolling down my socks.
But it was "totally awesome" when I got to the top and ate lunch with all of my friends and then got to perform skits. I wrote one and performed a skit I wrote, based off of a scene from the Princess Bride, with my friend Marjorie. (I would show it to you, but it's full of Hollins references I'm not sure you get.) We had some others based off of Titanic, the Hangover, Twilight (the movie), Sixteen Candles, and Very Potter Musical. In the end our skits were so good, the student government awarded us the Golden Doughnut (seen below), something the First-Year Class hasn't won in almost five years.
Some of the girls performing "Gotta Get back to Hollins" based off "A Very Potter Musical"
Winning the Golden Doughnut: you can see my sleeve hanging out from behind the girl (our lovely SGA president) furthest to the left
In the end, though, I didn't feel safe climbing back down because I had a killer migraine, so I rode back down in one of the vans took a shower and started my "Tinker Coma". Tinker Day was pretty amazing, but I know I'm gonna hike some Colorado Mountains this summer to prepare for next year. Colorado Pride will be avenged!!!!!!
